Understanding Dew Point & Condensation

Learn why condensation forms and how it leads to damp and mould problems.

What is Dew Point?

Dew point is the temperature at which air becomes saturated with moisture. When air cools to this point, water vapour condenses into liquid water.

How Condensation Forms

When warm, humid air touches a cold surface (like a window or wall), the air cools locally. If it cools below dew point, moisture condenses on that surface.

From Condensation to Mould

Persistent condensation creates perfect conditions for mould growth. Mould spores are always present - they only need moisture and organic material to grow.

Common Condensation Solutions

1. Reduce Humidity
  • Use extractor fans when cooking or showering
  • Dry clothes outdoors or in ventilated rooms
  • Use lids on pans when cooking
  • Consider a dehumidifier in problem areas
  • Vent tumble dryers to outside
2. Improve Ventilation
  • Open windows regularly, especially after showers
  • Install trickle vents in windows
  • Use humidity-activated extractor fans
  • Don't block airbricks or vents
  • Consider whole-house ventilation systems
3. Warm Cold Surfaces
  • Improve wall insulation
  • Use thermal curtains on windows
  • Move furniture away from cold walls
  • Consider insulated plasterboard
  • Address thermal bridging issues
4. Professional Interventions
  • Professional damp surveys to identify root causes
  • Positive Input Ventilation (PIV) systems
  • Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR)
  • Thermal imaging surveys to find cold spots
  • Professional mould remediation if needed

Need Professional Condensation Solutions?

While this calculator helps understand condensation, persistent damp problems need professional diagnosis. Condensation can often be confused with rising damp or penetrating damp - each requires different treatments.
